uploading images help request

I've taken some pics with an hd camera and even after reducing the size to 1200x 900 am getting the message that the file is too large to upload. How do I make the file smaller yet as big as it can be and still be uploaded? I want to use it as a background and have as little tiling as possible.

Edit: I think I've got it now, 900 x 675
