Something people may not know about me, I am a bit of a sci-fi fan. I do not have a set of Mr Spock ears, or a Jedi lightsaber, but I do like watching sci-fi films and TV shows. I am writing this after having watched an episode of Dr Who on the blessed creation that is YouTube. I started wondering why we, as individuals, like sci-fi. I think a part of it is the excitement, travelling through time and space, battling monsters, saving the universe, etc. Perhaps, though, there is something else, on a subconscious level. Perhaps it is because we like the idea of a person, or group of people, who can rescue us, who can save us when we are in peril. And perhaps this is not fiction after all. The people who help us in our time of need might not travel in a space-ship, or have loads of flashy technology. They could be a person on the end of a telephone, or on the other end of the computer. People who give us advice and support when we need it, and give us the strength to carry on when our own strength has deserted us. So, perhaps, we all have it in us to be heroes.
